Dot density

This is a dot density map depicting the means of commuting in the Seattle area.

ISOLINES!

This is an isoline map I've created that show levels of the dangerous SMERG concentrations in Virginia.

Isoline Map example

This map shows an isoline map in a different style than what Im used to seeing. This map shows magnetic declination across the globe.

Project proposal

Final Project Proposal

-map subject - Sunken ships and their relative value
-reason why this is your pick - Because i've never seen a map like this and it would be interesting to try and create.
-map audience - 18th century pirates.
-type of map you're envisioning Tourist style map depicting great caches of treasure lost at sea
-scope of map (world? Virginia? Dorm room?) Caribbean islands.
-data specs (note where the data is from, the year, the size/complexity of the dataset, and the apparent accuracy)
-basemap needed for map - Caribbean islands
-expected production steps (be realistic and calendar focused) Gather data, accuire maps, import data, depict proper symbolization.
-challenges you perceive

Lost treasures of the world
Create a map with identifying locations of famous shipwrecks and treasure hidden throughout the world
I would like to create a map that could be used as an educational resource for those interested in the history of lost treasures of the world
I plan on gathering a multitude of famous and historic maps in order to compile them into an overview of famous lost treasures of the world to highlight areas of interest.
Initially I planned on presenting this data on a global scale but through more research I hope to find areas I can focus on specifically such as the Caribbean and the surrounding areas of the English trade routes.
I would like to compare the relative predicted value of these shipwrecks and their locations to create a proportional symbol map that highlights these areas.

The base map used will be determined by what area I decide to focus on, be it the Caribbean, Bermuda triangle, or British islands.

Proportional Symbols Map

This class we were tasked to find an interesting proportional symbols map. This map illustrates tweets about beer across the US. More into found here!

Lab 6

The printed vs digital map shows a large difference in colors used, I found the digital version to more accurately represent the data chosen as the printed version skewed the hues selected.

Lab 5 Gray Chloropleth Maps

One of the initial differences seen is the greater abundance of light colored states depicting less vacant houses among the Midwest in the Equal Interval Map. The Natural Breaks map makes the Florida panhandle and surrounding states appear to have a higher value when compared to the Equal Interval map.

Chloropleth map example

This is a map of the United States that depicts the quantity of organic material in soil. Areas in the Midwest stand out as well as swamp areas in Georgia and the Florida Everglades. This map was used in part with several others to create a National map of Vegetation Eco-regions found here.

#4 Campus Map

Week 4 has us chose a campus map that we find has good graphical representations of its buildings. I found that the map for Allegheny College to have a good mix of 3D elements while preserving a good representation of the campus layout.

Lab 3!

We were tasked to recreate a map of the historic Harpers Ferry area. This is the result

Map Post #3

This is an infographic type map that displays the CO2 emissions of the world in comparison to their 1990 data. This map was created when it was determined that China had overtaken the US in total carbon emission output. For more detail about this data you can read more here. The original source was found here!

Lab Project One

This is the first image produced in the GGS 310 class. It represents the four illustrations of a Sphere, Geoid, Ellipsoid, and Natural Surface.

The power of projection!

Map Projections can have dramatic effects on distorting land masses and apparent size of countries. These maps show a few examples of how a country can be distorted. More detailed explanations of these maps can be found Here!

This is a map of the United States depicting the average distance to the nearest road. I chose this map because I found it interesting to see that California had an abundance of land with more than 20 km to the nearest road considering how populous it is.
